Zoloft Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Zoloft® is an antidepressant in a group of drugs known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. It affects chemicals in the brain that may become unbalanced and that may cause depression, panic, anxiety, or obsessive-compulsive symptoms. It helps to improve a depressed person's mood.

Zoloft Dosage

  • If you have Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, then the usual starting dose is 50 milligrams once a day
  • For the treatment of Panic Disorder and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, the usual dose during the first week is 25 milligrams once a day.

Uses of Zoloft

  • Zoloft is used to treat depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder.
  • It may also be used to treat other medical conditions those are listed in the medication guide.

Side Effects of Zoloft

Before taken Zoloft medicine, you should discuss the side effects with your doctor.  If any develop or change in intensity, then you should inform your doctor as soon as possible. Because only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Zoloft. Side effects may include:

  • Agitation
  • Constipation
  • Dry mouth
  • Fatigue
  • Gas
  • Headache
  • Insomnia
  • Nausea
  • Rash
  • Sore throat
  • Tremor
  • Vomiting

Warnings and precautions before taking Zoloft:

  • You should not used sertraline if you are taking monoamine oxidase inhibitors, including phenelzine and tranylcypromine.
  • If you are taking prescription and nonprescription medications, vitamins, nutritional supplements, and herbal products including anticoagulants such as warfarin; antidepressants such as amitriptyline, amoxapine; then you should tell your doctor.
  • After taken this medicine, then you may feel dizzy, or drowsiness. So you should not participate in any activities that require alertness such as driving and operate machinery.

Drug Interaction :-

If you are taking Zoloft with certain other drugs, then the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. So it is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Zoloft with the following:

  • Cimetidine
  • Digitoxin
  • Flecainide
  • Lithium
  • Propafenone
  • Sumatriptan
  • Warfarin

After taken Zoloft if you feel that overdose is suspected, then you should contact with your doctor immediately. Because it may lead to another serious effect. Symptoms of a Zoloft overdose include:

  • Dizziness
  • Coma
  • Drowsiness
  • Seizures
  • Nausea
  • Confusion
  • Vomiting
