Welchol Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Welchol is a cholesterol-lowering medication. It help lower LDL or "bad" cholesterol along with diet and exercise. You can also be taken alone or with other cholesterol-lowering medications known as statins.

Welchol Dosage

  • The usual starting dose is 6 tablets a day, taken as a single dose or divided into 2 doses.
  • For Children, the usual dose must be determined by your doctor.

Uses of Welchol

  • Welchol is used alone or with another drug to lower high levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) in the blood.
  • It may also be used to treat other medical conditions those are listed in the medication guide.

Side Effects of Welchol

Before taken Welchol medicine, you should discuss the side effects with your doctor.  If any develop or change in intensity, then you should inform your doctor as soon as possible. Because only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Welchol. Side effects may include:

  • Constipation
  • Indigestion
  • Muscle aches
  • Sore throat
  • Weakness

Warnings and precautions before taking Welchol:

  • If you have difficulty swallowing or suffer from severe digestive problems, then you should be used this medicine with extra caution.
  • You should not stop taking this medicine without talking with your doctor. Because when you will stop taking this medicine, your blood cholesterol levels may be increase again.
  • After taken this medicine, then you may feel dizzy, or drowsiness. So you should not participate in any activities that require alertness such as driving and operate machinery.

Drug Interaction :-

If you are taking Welchol with certain other drugs, then the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. So it is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Welchol with the following:

  • Ezetemibe
  • Ursodiol
  • Verapamil

After taken Welchol if you feel that overdose is suspected, then you should contact with your doctor immediately. Because it may lead to another serious effect. Symptoms of a Welchol overdose include:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Constipation
  • Flatulence
  • Intestinal blockage
