Voltaren Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Voltaren®-XR is in a class of drugs known as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. It works by reducing hormones that may cause inflammation and pain in the body. It reduces the joint pain, stiffness, inflammation, or swelling that may be occur due to rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.

Voltaren Dosage

  • For the treatment of osteoarthritism, the usual starting dose is 100 to 150 milligrams a day.
  • If you are taking Voltaren-XR, then the usual dose is 100 milligrams and you should be taken once a day.

Uses of Voltaren

  • Diclofenac is used to reduce pain, inflammation and stiffness that may caused by many conditions, such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis.
  • It may also be used to treat pain that may caused by gout, painful shoulder and cancer.

Side Effects of Voltaren

Before taken Voltaren medicine, you should discuss the side effects with your doctor.  If any develop or change in intensity, then you should inform your doctor as soon as possible. Because only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Voltaren. Side effects may include:

  • Abdominal pain or cramps
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Constipation
  • Rash
  • Diarrhea
  • Peptic ulcers
  • Headache
  • Itching
  • Nausea
  • Fluid retention

Warnings and precautions before taking Voltaren:

  • You should tell your doctor if you are allergic to diclofenac, aspirin or other NSAIDs such as ibuprofen and naproxen, any other medications.
  • If you have kidney problems, heart disease, or high blood pressure, then you should be used this drug cautiously.
  • If you have any medical conditions such as runny nose or nasal polyps, lupus, porphyria, liver, or kidney disease or swelling of the hands or lower legs, then you should tell your doctor.

Drug Interaction :-

If you are taking Voltaren with certain other drugs, then the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. So it is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Voltaren with the following:

  • Aspirin
  • Phenobarbital
  • Methotrexate
  • Cyclosporine
  • Lithium
  • Diuretics such as Dyazide, Midamor, and Lasix
  • Insulin or oral antidiabetes medications such as Micronase

After taken Voltaren if you feel that overdose is suspected, then you should contact with your doctor immediately. Because it may lead to another serious effect. Symptoms of a Voltaren overdose include:

  • Acute kidney failure
  • Drowsiness
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Vomiting
