Valtrex Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Valtrex is used to treat various herpes infections such as herpes zoster, genital herpes, and herpes cold sores on the face and lips.

Valtrex Dosage

  • For the treatment of shingles, the usual starting dose is 1 gram 3 times a day for 7 days.
  • For the treatment of genital herpes, the usual starting dose for the first attack is 1 gram twice a day for 10 days.

Side Effects of Valtrex

Before taken Valtrex medicine, you should discuss the side effects with your doctor. If any develop or change in intensity, then you should inform your doctor as soon as possible. Because only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Valtrex. Side effects may include:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Coma
  • Decreased consciousness
  • Facial swelling
  • Hallucinations
  • Joint pain
  • Mania
  • Nausea
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Visual abnormalities

Warnings and precautions before taking Valtrex:

  • If you are taking this medication, then high doses of Valtrex have proved dangerous in people whose immune system is compromised because of HIV infection, bone marrow transplant, or kidney transplant.
  • If you are taking drugs that may damage the kidneys such as Neomycin or Streptomycin, Valtrex can make your condition worse or also affect your central nervous system.
  • Valtrex relieves the symptoms of genital herpes, but it is not a cure. There's also no evidence that it will prevent transmission of the disease. To avoid spreading the infection, don't have sexual intercourse during a flare-up.

Drug Interaction :-

If you are taking Valtrex with certain other drugs, then the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. So it is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Valtrex with cimetidine (Tagamet) and/or probenecid (Benemid).


After taken Valtrex if you feel that overdose is suspected, then you should contact with your doctor immediately. Because it may lead to another serious effect. When taken by people with kidney disorders, excessive doses of Valtrex have been known to cause psychological problems and kidney failure.
