Valium Medication - Uses & Side Effects

It belongs to a class of drugs known as benzodiazepines. Valium is used for the treatment of anxiety disorders and for short-term relief of the symptoms of anxiety. It is also used to treats the symptoms of acute alcohol withdrawal, to relax muscles, to relieve the uncontrolled muscle movements that may be caused by cerebral palsy and paralysis of the lower body and limbs.

Valium Dosage

  • Treatment of Anxiety Disorders and Short-Term Relief of the Symptoms of Anxiety, the usual starting dose is 2 milligrams to 10 milligrams 2 to 4 times daily.
  • For the treatment of Acute Alcohol Withdrawal, the usual starting dose is 10 milligrams 3 or 4 times during the first 24 hours, then 5 milligrams 3 or 4 times daily as needed.

Side Effects of Valium

Before taken Valium medicine, you should discuss the side effects with your doctor. If any develop or change in intensity, then you should inform your doctor as soon as possible. Because only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Valium. Side effects may include:

  • Anxiety
  • Drowsiness
  • Fatigue
  • Light-headedness
  • Loss of muscle coordination

Warnings and precautions before taking Valium:

  • After taken this medicine, then you may feel dizzy, or drowsiness. So you should not participate in any activities that require alertness such as driving and operate machinery.
  • If you have liver or kidney problems, then you should be used Valium cautiously.

Drug Interaction :-

If you are taking Valium with certain other drugs, then the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. So it is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Valium with the following:

  • Antiseizure drugs such as Dilantin
  • Barbiturates such as phenobarbital
  • Cimetidine
  • Digoxin (Lanoxin)
  • Fluoxetine
  • Isoniazid
  • Levodopa
  • MAO inhibitors
  • Narcotics such as Percocet
  • Omeprazole (Prilosec)
  • Propoxyphene (Darvon)
  • Rifampin (Rifadin)

After taken Valium if you feel that overdose is suspected, then you should contact with your doctor immediately. Because it may lead to another serious effect. Symptoms of a Valium overdose include:

  • Coma
  • Diminished reflexes
  • Sleepiness
