Valcyte Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Valganciclovir belongs to a group of medications known as antivirals. It is used to treat a viral eye infection known as cytomegalovirus retinitis for people with AIDS. It works by killing the virus (CMV) that may causes the infection.

Valcyte Dosage

  • For the treatment of active CMV retinitis, the usual starting dose is 900 milligrams twice a day for 21 days.

Uses of Valcyte

  • Valcyte is also used to prevent CMV disease in people who've had a kidney, heart, or kidney-pancreas transplant.

Side Effects of Valcyte

Before taken Valcyte medicine, you should discuss the side effects with your doctor.  If any develop or change in intensity, then you should inform your doctor as soon as possible. Because only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Valcyte. Side effects may include:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Burning or prickling feeling
  • Diarrhea
  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Insomnia
  • Mental changes
  • Nausea
  • Tremors
  • Vision problems

Warnings and precautions before taking Valcyte:

  • If you are taking valcyte, then it can affect the kidneys. So you should tell your doctor.
  • After taken this medicine, then you may feel dizzy, or drowsiness. So you should not participate in any activities that require alertness such as driving and operate machinery.
  • If you are using this drug, then it may cause severe blood side effects such as low platelets, low blood cell counts.

Drug Interaction :-

If you are taking Valcyte with certain other drugs, then the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. So it is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Valcyte with the following:

  • Didanosine
  • Mycophenolate mofetil
  • Probenecid
  • Zidovudine

After taken Valcyte if you feel that overdose is suspected, then you should contact with your doctor immediately. Because it may lead to another serious effect. Symptoms of a Valcyte overdose include:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Convulsions
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Tremor
