Tofranil Medication - Uses & Side Effects

It is a member of the family of drugs known as tricyclic antidepressants. Tofranil is used to treat depression. It is also used on a short-term basis, along with behavioral therapies.

Tofranil Dosage

  • For adults, the usual starting dose is 75 milligrams a day.
  • Safety and effectiveness in children under the age of 6 have not been established.

Side Effects of Tofranil

  • Breast development in males
  • Confusion
  • Diarrhea
  • Hallucinations
  • Low blood pressure upon standing
  • Nausea
  • Tremors
  • Vomiting

Warnings and precautions before taking Tofranil:

  • You should be use Tofranil cautiously if you have or have ever had: narrow-angle glaucoma; difficulty in urinating; heart, liver, or thyroid disease; or seizures.
  • You should tell your doctor if you develop a sore throat or fever while you are taking Tofranil.
  • After taken this medicine, then you may feel dizzy, or drowsiness. So you should not participate in any activities that require alertness such as driving and operate machinery.

Drug Interaction :-

If you are taking Tofranil with certain other drugs, then the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. So it is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Tofranil with the following:

  • Albuterol
  • Barbiturates such as Nembutal and Seconal
  • Carbamazepine
  • Decongestants such as Sudafed
  • Epinephrine
  • Flecainide
  • Guanethidine
  • Methylphenidate
  • Norepinephrine
  • Other antidepressants such as Elavil and Pamelor
  • Phenytoin (Dilantin)
  • Quinidine
  • Thyroid medications such as Synthroid

After taken Tofranil if you feel that overdose is suspected, then you should contact with your doctor immediately. Because it may lead to another serious effect. Symptoms of a Tofranil overdose include:

  • Agitation
  • Bluish skin
  • Coma
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Heart failure
  • Involuntary writhing or jerky movements
