Sonata Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Sonata is used for people who have trouble falling asleep at bedtime. It is intended only for short-term use.

Sonata Dosage

  • For adults, the usual starting dose is 10 milligrams taken once daily at bedtime.
  • The usual starting dose for older adults is 5 milligrams, as they may be more sensitive to the effects of Sonata.

Side Effects of Sonata

Before taken Sonata medicine, you should discuss the side effects with your doctor. If any develop or change in intensity, then you should inform your doctor as soon as possible. Because only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Sonata. Side effects may include:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Dizziness
  • Eye pain
  • Headache
  • Memory loss
  • Nausea
  • Sleepiness
  • Tingling
  • Weakness

Warnings and precautions before taking Sonata :

  • You should not take Sonata unless you plan to be in bed for at least four hours after taking it. If you need to be alert and active in less than four hours, then your performance could be impaired.
  • After taken this medicine, then you may feel dizzy, or drowsiness. So you should not participate in any activities that require alertness such as driving and operate machinery.
  • You should be used Sonata for temporary relief of insomnia.
  • If you are allergic to FD&C Yellow No. 5, then you'll probably want to avoid Sonata, which contains this substance.

Drug Interaction :-

If you are taking Sonata with certain other drugs, then the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. So it is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Sonata with the following:

  • Carbamazepine
  • Diphenhydramine
  • Erythromycin
  • Imipramine
  • Phenobarbital
  • Rifampin
  • Thioridazine

After taken Sonata if you feel that overdose is suspected, then you should contact with your doctor immediately. Because it may lead to another serious effect. Symptoms of a Sonata overdose include:

  • Drowsiness
  • Mental confusion
  • Grogginess
  • Lack of coordination
  • Flaccid muscles
  • Labored breathing
  • Coma
