Rocaltrol Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Rocaltrol is a synthetic form of vitamin D used to treat people on dialysis who have hypocalcemia and resulting bone damage. It is also used to treat low blood calcium levels in people who have hypoparathyroidism.

Rocaltrol Dosage

  • For People on Dialysis, the usual starting dose is 0.25 microgram daily.
  • For Low Calcium Levels Due to Hypoparathyroidism, the usual starting dose is 0.25 microgram daily, and you should be taken in the morning.

  • It is used to treat people on dialysis.

Side Effects of Rocaltrol

Before taken Rocaltrol medicine, you should discuss the side effects with your doctor. If any develop or change in intensity, then you should inform your doctor as soon as possible. Because only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Rocaltrol. Side effects may include:

  • Abnormal thirst
  • Decreased sex drive
  • Elevated blood cholesterol levels
  • High blood pressure
  • Inflamed eyes
  • Kidney problems
  • Loss of appetite
  • Runny nose

Warnings and precautions before taking Rocaltrol:

  • You should not take additional doses of vitamin D while you are taking Rocaltrol.
  • Your doctor will monitor your calcium levels while you are taking Rocaltrol because excessive calcium levels can be very dangerous.
  • While you are taking Rocaltrol, you should have an adequate daily intake of calcium either from foods or from a calcium supplement.

Drug Interaction :-

If you are taking Rocaltrol with certain other drugs, then the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. So it is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Rocaltrol with the following:

  • Antacids containing magnesium, such as Maalox
  • Calcium supplements
  • Digitalis
  • Ketoconazole
  • Phenobarbital
  • Steroid medications
  • Thiazide water pills
  • Vitamin D pills

After taken Rocaltrol if you feel that overdose is suspected, then you should contact with your doctor immediately. Because it may lead to another serious effect. Severe overdosage of Rocaltrol may cause serious effects, such as extremely high blood levels of calcium.
