Prozac Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Prozac belongs to the class of drugs known as selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Prozac is used to treat panic disorder, such as panic that are associated with agoraphobia. Prozac is used for the treatment of depression.

Prozac Dosage

  • For adults, the usual starting dose is 20 milligrams a day, usually taken in the morning.
  • The usual starting dose is 10 or 20 milligrams a day. Children starting at 10 milligrams will have their dose increased to 20 milligrams a day after 1 week.

Side Effects of Prozac

Before taken Prozac medicine, you should discuss the side effects with your doctor. If any develop or change in intensity, then you should inform your doctor as soon as possible. Because only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Prozac. Side effects may include:

  • Abnormal dreams
  • Diarrhea
  • Sex drive
  • Flu-like symptoms
  • Headache
  • Impotence
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea

Warnings and precautions before taking Prozac:

  • After taken this medicine, then you may feel dizzy, or drowsiness. So you should not participate in any activities that require alertness such as driving and operate machinery.
  • If you develop a skin rash or hives while you are taking Prozac, so you should discontinue use of Prozac and notify your doctor immediately.
  • Prozac should be used with caution if you have a history of mania or seizures. So you should discuss all of your medical conditions with your doctor before taking Prozac.

Drug Interaction :-

If you are taking Prozac with certain other drugs, then the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. So it is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Prozac with the following:

  • Alprazolam
  • Carbamazepine
  • Diazepam
  • Flecainide
  • Haloperidol
  • Lithium
  • Phenytoin
  • Sumatriptan
  • Tryptophan
  • Vinblastine
  • Warfarin

After taken Prozac if you feel that overdose is suspected, then you should contact with your doctor immediately. Because it may lead to another serious effect. Symptoms of a Prozac overdose include:

  • Coma
  • Delirium
  • Fainting
  • High fever
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Low blood pressure
  • Mania
  • Rigid muscles
  • Sweating
