Provigil Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Provigil is a stimulant drug used to treat unusually sleepy, obstructive sleep apnea/hypopnea syndrome, or shift work sleep disorder.

Provigil Dosage

  • For adults, the usual starting dose of Provigil is 200 milligrams taken as a single dose in the morning.
  • Not for children under 16.

Side Effects of Provigil

Before taken Provigil medicine, you should discuss the side effects with your doctor. If any develop or change in intensity, then you should inform your doctor as soon as possible. Because only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Provigil. Side effects may include:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Headache
  • Infection
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea
  • Prickling or tingling feeling
  • Runny nose
  • Sore throat

Warnings and precautions before taking Provigil:

  • If you have high blood pressure, liver or kidney problems, or a history of psychosis or drug abuse, then you should be used Provigil with caution.
  • After taken this medicine, then you may feel dizzy, or drowsiness. So you should not participate in any activities that require alertness such as driving and operate machinery.
  • Provigil should be avoided by people with certain types of heart disease such as mitral valve prolapse. If you've ever had a heart problem, then you should tell your doctor before using Provigil.
  • Provigil may cause serious skin reactions, such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome and erythema multiforme. So you should tell your doctor.

Drug Interaction :-

If you are taking Provigil with certain other drugs, then the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. So it is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Provigil with the following:

  • Antidepressants
  • Carbamazepine
  • Diazepam
  • Itraconazole
  • Ketoconazole
  • Methylphenidate
  • Oral contraceptives and hormonal implants
  • Phenobarbital
  • Rifampin
  • Theophylline
  • Warfarin

After taken Provigil if you feel that overdose is suspected, then you should contact with your doctor immediately. Because it may lead to another serious effect. Symptoms of a Provigil overdose include:

  • Aggressiveness
  • Confusion
  • Diarrhea
  • Fluttering heartbeat
  • Insomnia
  • Nausea
  • Sleep disturbances
