Prilosec Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Prilosec is used for the short-term treatment of the following conditions such as Stomach ulcer, Duodenal ulcer, Erosive esophagitis, Heartburn and other symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease.It is also used to maintain healing of erosive esophagitis.

Prilosec Dosage

  • For short-term treatment of Active Duodenal Ulcer, the usual starting dose is 20 milligrams once a day.
  • For treatment of Duodenal Ulcers that may be Caused by H. Pylori, the usual starting dosage is 40 milligrams daily.
  • For the treatment of Gastric Ulcer, the usual starting dose is 40 milligrams once a day.

Uses of Prilosec

  • Prilosec is used for the short-term treatment of the following conditions such as Stomach ulcer, Duodenal ulcer, Erosive esophagitis.

Side Effects of Prilosec

Before taken Prilosec medicine, you should discuss the side effects with your doctor. If any develop or change in intensity, then you should inform your doctor as soon as possible. Because only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Prilosec. Side effects may include:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Diarrhea
  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting

Warnings and precautions before taking Prilosec:

  • Long-term use of Prilosec may cause severe stomach inflammation. So you should be used this medication with extra caution.
  • After taken this medicine, then you may feel dizzy, or drowsiness. So you should not participate in any activities that require alertness such as driving and operate machinery.

Drug Interaction :-

If you are taking Prilosec with certain other drugs, then the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. So it is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Prilosec with the following:

  • Ampicillin-containing drugs such as Unasyn
  • Cyclosporine
  • Diazepam
  • Iron
  • Ketoconazole
  • Phenytoin
  • Warfarin

After taken Prilosec if you feel that overdose is suspected, then you should contact with your doctor immediately. Because it may lead to another serious effect. Symptoms of a Prilosec overdose include:

  • Blurred vision
  • Confusion
  • Drowsiness
  • Flushing
  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Rapid
  • Sweating
