Prednisone Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Prednisone, a steroid drug, is used to reduce inflammation and alleviate symptoms in a variety of disorders, such as rheumatoid arthritis and severe cases of asthma. It is also used to treat primary or secondary adrenal cortex insufficiency.

Prednisone Dosage

  • The usual starting doses can range from 5 milligrams to 60 milligrams a day.
  • For treatment of acute attacks of multiple sclerosis, the usual starting doses is 200 milligrams per day.

Uses of Prednisone

  • Abnormal adrenal gland development
  • Blood disorders
  • Certain cancers
  • Eye diseases of various kinds
  • Flare-ups of multiple sclerosis
  • Lung diseases, including tuberculosis
  • Meningitis
  • Prevention of organ rejection
  • Rheumatoid arthritis and related disorders
  • Skin diseases
  • Trichinosis

Side Effects of Prednisone

Before taken Prednisone medicine, you should discuss the side effects with your doctor. If any develop or change in intensity, then you should inform your doctor as soon as possible. Because only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Prednisone. Side effects may include:

  • Euphoria
  • Insomnia
  • Mood changes
  • Personality changes
  • Severe depression

Warnings and precautions before taking Prednisone:

  • If you have an underactive thyroid gland or cirrhosis of the liver, then your doctor will prescribe prednisone for you at a lower-than-average dosage.
  • Prednisone should also be taken with caution if you have any of the following conditions such as Diverticulitis or other disorder of the intestine, High blood pressure, Kidney disorder, Myasthenia gravis, Osteoporosis, Peptic ulcer, Ulcerative colitis.
  • If you have an eye infection caused by the herpes simplex virus, then you should be used prednisone with great caution.
  • After taken this medicine, then you may feel dizzy, or drowsiness. So you should not participate in any activities that require alertness such as driving and operate machinery.

Drug Interaction :-

If you are taking Prednisone with certain other drugs, then the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. So it is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Prednisone with the following:

  • Amphotericin B
  • Blood thinners such as Coumadin
  • Carbamazepine
  • Estrogen drugs such as Premarin
  • Ketoconazole
  • Oral contraceptives
  • Phenobarbital
  • Rifampin
  • Troleandomycin

After taken Prednisone if you feel that overdose is suspected, then you should contact with your doctor immediately. Because it may lead to another serious effect. Long-term high doses of prednisone may produce Cushing's syndrome
