Phenergan Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Phenergan is an antihistamine that is used to treats nasal stuffiness and inflammation and red, inflamed eyes that may be caused by hay fever and other allergies. It is also used to treat itching, swelling, and redness from hives and other rashes; allergic reactions to blood transfusions.

Phenergan Dosage

  • For adults, the usual starting oral dose is 25 milligrams and you should be taken before bed.
  • For Children, the usual starting dose is a single 25-milligram dose at bedtime, or 6.25 to 12.5 milligrams 3 times daily.

Side Effects of Phenergan

Before taken Phenergan medicine, you should discuss the side effects with your doctor. If any develop or change in intensity, then you should inform your doctor as soon as possible. Because only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Phenergan. Side effects may include:

  • Blurred vision
  • Dizziness
  • Increased or decreased blood pressure
  • Nausea
  • Rash
  • Sedation
  • Vomiting

Warnings and precautions before taking Phenergan:

  • You should be avoid to taking Phenergan if you have chronic breathing problems such as emphysema, or if you suffer from sleep apnea.
  • If you have heart disease, high blood pressure or circulatory problems, liver problems, the eye condition known as narrow-angle glaucoma, or other abdominal obstructions. So you should be used this medicine with extra caution.
  • If you are using this medication, then it may cause a potentially fatal condition known as Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome. Symptoms such as high fever, sweating, and a rapid or irregular heartbeat. If you develop these symptoms, then you should stop taking Phenergan.
  • You should tell your doctor if you have any uncontrolled movements or seem to be unusually sensitive to sunlight.

Drug Interaction :-

If you are taking Phenergan with certain other drugs, then the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. So it is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Phenergan with the following:

  • Certain antidepressant drugs, including Elavil and Tofranil
  • Drugs that control spasms, such as Cogentin
  • MAO inhibitors such as the antidepressants Nardil and Parnate
  • Narcotic pain relievers such as Demerol and Dilaudid
  • Sedatives such as Halcion, Dalmane, and Seconal
  • Tranquilizers such as Xanax and Valium

After taken Phenergan if you feel that overdose is suspected, then you should contact with your doctor immediately. Because it may lead to another serious effect. Symptoms of a Phenergan overdose include:

  • Difficulty breathing
  • Fixed and dilated pupils
  • Heightened reflexes
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Muscle tension
  • Poor coordination
  • Seizures
