Mexitil Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Mexiletine (Mexitil®) is an antiarrhythmic agent. It is used to treats irregular heart rhythm. Irregular heart rhythms are generally divided into two main types: heartbeats that are faster than normal (tachycardia) and heartbeats that are slower than normal (bradycardia).

Mexitil Dosage

  • The usual starting dose is 200 milligrams every 8 hours.
  • If you want fast relief, then your doctor will start you on 400 milligrams of Mexitil, followed by 200 milligrams in 8 hours.

  • Mexitil is an anti-arrhythmic used to treat an irregular heartbeat.

Side Effects of Mexitil

Before taken Mexitil medicine, you should discuss the side effects with your doctor.  If any develop or change in intensity, then you should inform your doctor as soon as possible. Because only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Mexitil. Side effects may include:

  • Blurred vision
  • Changes in sleep habits
  • Depression
  • Diarrhea
  • Headache
  • Light-headedness
  • Nausea
  • Upset stomach

Warnings and precautions before taking Mexitil:

  • If you have seizure disorder, then you should tell your doctor and you should be used Mexitil with extra caution.
  • After taken mexitil, you may feel dizzy. So you should not participate in any activities that require full mental alertness such as drive or operate machinery.
  • You should tell your doctor your medical history especially if you have congestive heart failure, low blood pressure, liver disease, any allergies or other drugs.

Drug Interaction :-

If you are taking Mexitil with certain other drugs, then the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. So it is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Mexitil with the following:

  • Antacids
  • Caffeine products
  • Other antiarrhythmic drugs
  • Phenobarbital
  • Rifampin
  • Theophylline products

After taken Mexitil if you feel that overdose is suspected, then you should contact with your doctor immediately. Because it may lead to another serious effect. Symptoms of a Mexitil overdose include:

  • Coma
  • Low blood pressure
  • Nausea
  • Seizures
  • Tingling or pins and needles
