Mevacor Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Lovastatin is in a class of medications known as HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors. It works by slowing the production of cholesterol in the body. Lovastatin can help lower blood cholesterol for patients who are at risk of getting heart disease or a stroke. Lovastatin is also used together with lifestyle changes such as diet, weight-loss, and other fatty substances in the blood.

Mevacor Dosage

  • The usual starting dose is 20 milligrams once a day, and you should be taken this medication with the evening meal.
  • The maximum usual dose is 80 milligrams per day, and you should be taken as a single dose.

Uses of Mevacor

  • Mevacor is used along with a proper diet to help lower cholesterol and fats in the blood.

Side Effects of Mevacor

Before taken Mevacor medicine, you should discuss the side effects with your doctor.  If any develop or change in intensity, then you should inform your doctor as soon as possible. Because only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Mevacor. Side effects may include:

  • Altered sense of taste
  • Muscle weakness with rash

Warnings and precautions before taking Mevacor:

  • If you are pregnant, or plan to become pregnant, then tell your doctor. If you become pregnant while you are taking lovastatin, then you should stop taking lovastatin and call your doctor immediately.
  • If you are having surgery such as dental surgery, then you should tell the doctor that you are taking lovastatin.

Drug Interaction :-

If you are taking Mevacor with certain other drugs, then the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. So it is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Mevacor with the following:

  • Verapamil
  • Itraconazole
  • Clarithromycin
  • Protease inhibitors
  • Nefazodone
  • Ketoconazole
  • Erythromycin
  • Fluconazole
  • Gemfibrozil
  • Amiodarone

After taken Mevacor if you feel that overdose is suspected, then you should contact with your doctor immediately. Because it may lead to another serious effect. Symptoms of Mevacor overdose may includes severe vomiting.
