Macrodantin Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Macrodantin is an antibacterial drug and it is used to treat urinary tract infections that may be caused by various strains of bacteria. The mechanism by which nitrofurantoin kills bacteria is unknown.

Macrodantin Dosage

  • The usual starting dosage of Macrodantin is 50 to 100 milligrams and you should be taken 4 times a day.
  • The usual starting dosage of Macrobid is one 100 milligram capsule every 12 hours for 7 days.

Uses of Macrodantin

  • This medication is used to treat or prevent certain urinary tract infections.

Side Effects of Macrodantin

Before taken Macrodantin medicine, you should discuss the side effects with your doctor.  If any develop or change in intensity, then you should inform your doctor as soon as possible. Because only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Macrodantin. Side effects may include:

  • Lack or loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting.
  • Itching (pruritus)
  • Diarrhea
  • Severe swelling of lips, face or tongue (angioedema)
  • Inflammation of the liver (hepatitis)
  • Pain in the joints (arthralgia)
  • Damage to the lungs (pulmonary toxicity)
  • Yellow or brown colouration of urine
  • Rash

Warnings and precautions before taking Macrodantin:

  • If you have diarrhea, then you should tell your doctor. Because it may be a sign of serious intestinal inflammation.
  • If you are taking this medicine, then it may cause hemolytic anemia.
  • You should be avoided this medicine to take in the weeks prior to childbirth.

Drug Interaction :-

If you are taking Macrodantin with certain other drugs, then the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. So it is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Macrodantin with the following:

  • Magnesium trisilicate
  • The gout drugs probenecid and sulfinpyrazone and other drugs that increase the amount of uric acid in the urine.

An overdose of nitrofurantoin does not cause any specific symptoms other than vomiting. But after taken Macrodantin if you feel that overdose is suspected, then you should contact with your doctor immediately. Because it may lead to another serious effect.
