Lupron Depot Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Lupron is a synthetic version of the naturally occurring gonadotropin releasing hormone. It suppresses shedding of the endometrium during menstruation. It is used to treat endometriosis, a condition in which cells from the endometrium grow outside of the uterus.

Lupron Depot Dosage

  • For endometriosis, a single intramuscular injection is given once a month.
  • For anemia due to uterine fibroids, the same dose is given once a month for up to 3 months.
  • For prostate cancer, a single injection is given once a month.

  • It is used to treat endometriosis.

Side Effects of Lupron Depot

Before taken Lupron Depot medicine, you should discuss the side effects with your doctor. If any develop or change in intensity, then you should inform your doctor as soon as possible. Because only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Lupron Depot. Side effects may include:

  • Anxiety
  • Breast tenderness or pain
  • Depression
  • Fluid retention
  • Development of male characteristics
  • General pain
  • Inflammation of the vagina
  • Joint pain

Warnings and precautions before taking Lupron Depot:

  • You should notify your doctor if you continue to have a menstrual period.
  • If you are taking this medication, then treatment with Lupron may cause an irreversible weakening of the bones.
  • Norethindrone should be used with caution if you have heart-disease risk factors such as high cholesterol or cigarette smoking.
  • Norethindrone may cause depression, and should be discontinued if severe depression occurs. The drug should also be discontinued if you develop vision problems or migraine headaches.

Drug Interaction :-

No interactions are likely in men. But if you are taking Lupron Depot with certain other drugs, then the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. So it is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Lupron Depot with any type of hormones, such as birth control pills.


An overdose is extremely unlikely. But after taken Lupron Depot if you feel that overdose is suspected, then you should contact with your doctor immediately. Because it may lead to another serious effect.
