Lamisil Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Lamisil is an antifungal medication. It is used to treat fungal infections. Terbinafine belongs to the group of medicines known as antifungals. Oral Lamisil is more effective for treating fungal nail infections than griseofulvin and itraconazole.

Lamisil Dosage

  • For the fungal infection of the fingernails, the usual starting dosage is 250-milligram tablet once a day and for 6 weeks.
  • For fungal infection of the toenails, the usual starting dose is 250-milligram tablet once a day for 12 weeks.

Uses of Lamisil

  • Lamisil is used to treat fungal infections of the fingernails and toenails.
  • It may also used to treat skin infections such as athlete's foot, jock itch or ringworm.

Side Effects of Lamisil

Before taken Lamisil medicine, you should discuss the side effects with your doctor.  If any develop or change in intensity, then you should inform your doctor as soon as possible. Because only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Lamisil. Side effects may include:

  • Depression
  • Indigestion
  • Dizziness
  • Loss of appetite
  • Anxiety
  • Headache
  • Liver disorders
  • Pain in the muscles and joints
  • Fatigue
  • Alteration in taste
  • Blood disorders

Warnings and precautions before taking Lamisil:

  • If you develop skin irritation, redness, itching, burning, blistering, while using the cream, then you should tell your doctor.
  • You should tell your doctor your medical history, especially if you have any allergies.
  • Before applying this medicine, first clean and dry the affected area of skin.

Drug Interaction :-

If you are taking Lamisil with certain other drugs, then the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. So it is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Lamisil with the following:

  • Antidepressants such as Elavil, Nardil
  • Cimetidine
  • Drugs classified as beta blockers
  • Rifampin

After taken Lamisil if you feel that overdose is suspected, then you should contact with your doctor immediately. Because it may lead to another serious effect. Symptoms of a Lamisil overdose include:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Dizziness
  • Frequent urination
  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Rash
  • Vomiting
