Indocin Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Indocin® is a nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drug. Indomethacin relieves the inflammation and pain that are associated with rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and gout. It is also used to treat bursitis, tendinitis, acute gouty arthritis, and other kinds of pain.

Indocin Dosage

  • The usual starting dose is 25 milligrams 2 or 3 times a day.
  • The usual starting dose is 75 to 150 milligrams daily divided into 3 to 4 small doses for 1 to 2 weeks.

Uses of Indocin

  • Indomethacin is used to reduce the pain, inflammation, and stiffness that may be caused by many conditions, such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, and bursitis.
  • It may also be used to treat other medical conditions those are listed in the medication guide.

Side Effects of Indocin

Before taken Indocin medicine, you should discuss the side effects with your doctor.  If any develop or change in intensity, then you should inform your doctor as soon as possible. Because only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Indocin. Side effects may include:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Constipation
  • Depression
  • Fatigue
  • Headache
  • Indigestion
  • Nausea
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Sleepiness or excessive drowsiness
  • Vomiting

Warnings and precautions before taking Indocin:

  • This drug should be used with caution if you have kidney or liver disease, and it can cause liver inflammation in some people.
  • You should not take aspirin or any other anti-inflammatory medications while you are taking Indocin without talking to your doctor.
  • After taken this medicine, then you may feel dizzy, or drowsiness. So you should not participate in any activities that require alertness such as driving and operate machinery.

Drug Interaction :-

If you are taking Indocin with certain other drugs, then the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. So it is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Indocin with the following:

  • Aspirin
  • Blood-thinning medicines such as coumadin
  • Captopril
  • Diflunisal
  • Loop diuretics
  • Probenecid

After taken Indocin if you feel that overdose is suspected, then you should contact with your doctor immediately. Because it may lead to another serious effect. Symptoms of a Indocin overdose include:

  • Convulsions
  • Disorientation
  • Intense headache
  • Lethargy
  • Mental confusion
  • Nausea
  • Numbness Vomiting
