Imitrex Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Imitrex medicine is used to treat migraine attacks. Safety and effectiveness of Imitrex tablets have not been established for cluster headache.

Imitrex Dosage

  • For adults, the usual starting doses is 25, 50, or 100 mg for the acute treatment of migraine.

Uses of Imitrex

  • Imitrex is used to treat migraine headaches.
  • It may also be used to treat other medical conditions those are listed in the medication guide.

Side Effects of Imitrex

Before taken Imitrex medicine, you should discuss the side effects with your doctor.  If any develop or change in intensity, then you should inform your doctor as soon as possible. Because only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Imitrex. Side effects may include:

  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Fatigue
  • Drowsiness

Warnings and precautions before taking Imitrex:

  • If you develop severe chest pain, then you should call your doctor immediately.
  • If you are taking Imitrex, then it may cause a serious heart irregularity. So you should be used this medicine with extra caution.
  • You should be used imitrex cautiously if you have liver or kidney disease. Also, if you have any trouble with your eyes, then you should tell your doctor.

Drug Interaction :-

If you are taking Imitrex with certain other drugs, then the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. So it is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Imitrex with the following:

  • Drugs classified as MAO inhibitors
  • Ergot-containing drugs such as Cafergot and Ergostat
  • Fluoxetine
  • Fluvoxamine

After taken Imitrex if you feel that overdose is suspected, then you should contact with your doctor immediately. Because it may lead to another serious effect. Symptoms of a Imitrex overdose include:

  • Bluish tinge to the skin
  • Convulsions
  • Dilated pupils
  • Lack of coordination
  • Paralysis
  • Redness in the arms and legs
  • Skin changes at the site of injection
