Geodon Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Geodon is used to treat schizophrenia and the manic episodes of bipolar disorder. It works by opposing the action of serotonin and dopamine, two of the brain's major chemical messengers.

Geodon Dosage

  • For the treatment of Schizophrenia, the usual starting dose is 20 milligrams twice a day.
  • For the treatment of Acute Manic Episodes Associated with Bipolar Disorder, the usual starting dose is 40 milligrams twice a day with food.

Side Effects of Geodon

Before taken Geodon medicine, you should discuss the side effects with your doctor. If any develop or change in intensity, then you should inform your doctor as soon as possible. Because only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Geodon. Side effects may include:

  • Accidental injury
  • Cold symptoms
  • Diarrhea
  • Energy loss
  • Headache
  • Indigestion
  • Muscle aches
  • Nausea
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Skin fungus

Warnings and precautions before taking Geodon:

  • After taken this medicine, then you may feel dizzy, or drowsiness. So you should not participate in any activities that require alertness such as driving and operate machinery.
  • If you have anxiety, restlessness, depression, dizziness, rashes, and vomiting, then you should stop taking this medication. You should also contact your doctor immediately if you develop these symptoms.
  • If you are taking Geodon, then it may suppress the cough reflex. Some people taking Geodon also develop a rash. So you should tell your doctor when this happens.
  • Geodon may also increase the risk of breast cancer. If you have a history of breast cancer, then you should tell your doctor.

Drug Interaction :-

If you are taking Geodon with certain other drugs, then the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. So it is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Geodon with the following:

  • Carbamazepine
  • Drugs that boost the effects of dopamine
  • Ketoconazole
  • Levodopa

After taken Geodon if you feel that overdose is suspected, then you should contact with your doctor immediately. Because it may lead to another serious effect. Symptoms of a Geodon overdose include:

  • Anxiety
  • Drowsiness
  • Tremors
  • Slurred speech
  • High blood pressure
