Flagyl Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Flagyl® kills or prevents the growth of various bacteria and protozoa. It is used to treats various infections such as skin, central nervous system, bones and joints, respiratory tract, vaginal infections, and intestinal infections.

Flagyl Dosage

  • If you have Acute Intestinal Amebiasis, then the usual dose is 750 milligrams taken by mouth 3 times daily for 5 to 10 days.
  • If you have Amebic Liver Abscess, then the usual dose is 500 milligrams or 750 milligrams taken by mouth 3 times daily for 5 to 10 days.
  • If you have Anaerobic Bacterial Infections, then the usual adult oral dosage is 7.5 milligrams per 2.2 pounds of body weight every 6 hours.

Uses of Flagyl

  • It is used to treat giardia infections of the small intestines, amebic liver abscess and dysentery.

Side Effects of Flagyl

Before taken Flagyl medicine, you should discuss the side effects with your doctor.  If any develop or change in intensity, then you should inform your doctor as soon as possible. Because only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Flagyl. Side effects may include:

  • Blood disorders
  • Inability to hold urine
  • Confusion
  • Hives
  • Dark urine
  • Furry tongue
  • Decreased sex drive

Warnings and precautions before taking Flagyl:

  • If you have liver disease, then you should tell your doctor and you should be taken Flagyl with extra caution.
  • After taken Flagyl medicine, you may feel dizzy or drowsiness. So you should not participate in any activities that require alertness such as drive or operate machinary.
  • You should also be avoided alcoholic beverages while you are taking this medication.

Drug Interaction:- If you are taking Flagyl with certain other drugs, then the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. So it is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Flagyl with the following:

  • Blood thinners such as Coumadin
  • Phenytoin
  • Cholestyramine
  • Phenobarbital
  • Cimetidine
  • Lithium
  • Disulfiram

After taken Flagyl if you feel that overdose is suspected, then you should contact with your doctor immediately. Because it may lead to another serious effect. Symptoms of Flagyl overdose may include:

  • Lack of muscle coordination
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
