Diuril Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Diuril is used in the treatment of high blood pressure and other conditions that require the elimination of excess fluid (water) from the body. These conditions include congestive heart failure, cirrhosis of the liver, corticosteroid and estrogen therapy, and kidney disease. It can be used alone or with other high blood pressure medications.

Diuril Dosage

  • For the treatment of Swelling due to excess water, the usual starting dose is 0.5 gram to 1 gram 1 or 2 times per day.
  • For the treatment of High Blood Pressure, the usual starting dose is 0.5 gram to 1 gram per day, and you should be taken as one dose or two or more smaller doses.

Uses of Diuril

  • Chlorothiazide is used to treat high blood pressure and fluid retention that may be caused by various conditions, including heart disease.
  • Chlorothiazide may also be used to treat patients with diabetes insipidus and certain electrolyte disturbances and to prevent kidney stones in patients with high levels of calcium in their blood.

Side Effects of Diuril

Before taken Diuril medicine, you should discuss the side effects with your doctor. If any develop or change in intensity, then you should inform your doctor as soon as possible. Because only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Diuril. Side effects may include:

  • Abdominal cramps
  • Changes in blood sugar
  • Diarrhea
  • Fever
  • Hair loss
  • Impotence
  • Loss of appetite
  • Excessive thirst

Warnings and precautions before taking Diuril:

  • If you are taking Diuril, then your doctor will do a complete assessment of your kidney function and continue to monitor it. So you should be used swith extra caution if you have severe kidney disease.
  • If you have liver disease, diabetes, gout, or the connective tissue disease lupus erythematosus, your doctor will prescribe Diuril cautiously.
  • If you have bronchial asthma or a history of allergies you may be at greater risk for an allergic reaction to Diuril.
  • You should be notify your doctor that you are taking Diuril if you have a medical emergency, and before you have surgery or dental treatment.

Drug Interaction :-If you are taking Diuril with certain other drugs, then the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. So it is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Diuril with the following:

  • Barbiturates such as phenobarbital and Seconal
  • Cholesterol-lowering drugs such as Questran and Colestid
  • Drugs to treat diabetes such as insulin and Micronase
  • Lithium
  • Narcotic painkillers such as Percocet
  • Other drugs for high blood pressure such as Capoten and Procardia XL
  • Steroids such as prednisone

After taken Diuril if you feel that overdose is suspected, then you should contact with your doctor immediately. Because it may lead to another serious effect. Symptoms of a Diuril overdose include

  • Dry mouth
  • Excessive thirst
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Muscle pain or cramps
