Differin Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Adapalene is in a class of medications known as retinoid-like compounds. It works by stopping pimples from forming under the surface of the skin. It helps the skin to renew itself more quickly and therefore reduces pimple and blackhead formation.

Differin Dosage

  • The usual starting dose is a thin film applied over the acne-affected area just before bedtime.

Side Effects of Differin

Before taken Differin medicine, you should discuss the side effects with your doctor. If any develop or change in intensity, then you should inform your doctor as soon as possible. Because only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Differin. Side effects may include:

  • Acne flare-ups
  • Burning
  • Dryness
  • Irritation
  • Itching
  • Redness
  • Scaling

Warnings and precautions before taking Differin:

  • Before using this drug, you should tell your doctor if you have allergies, sunburn. Exposure to sunlight, including sunlamps, should be minimized while you are using this medicine.
  • Use of sunscreen and protective clothing will allow more sun exposure.
  • Adapalene should not be applied to cuts, scrapes, sunburned or eczema-affected skin.
  • Particular caution is advised when you have used products containing sulfur, resorcinol or salicylic acid. Wait until the effects of such products on the skin have decreased before using adapalene.

Drug Interaction :-If you are taking Differin with certain other drugs, then the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. So it is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Differin with other drugs. Avoid using Differin with any other product that can irritate the skin, such as medicated soaps and cleansers, soaps and cosmetics that have a strong drying effect, and products with high concentrations of alcohol, astringents, spices, and lime.


An overdose of Differin topical is unlikely to occur. But after taken Differin if you feel that overdose is suspected, then you should contact with your doctor immediately. Because it may lead to another serious effect.
