Avodart Medication- Uses & Side Effects

Dutasteride prevents the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the body. DHT is involved in the development of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).

Avodart Dosage

  • For adults, you should be taken one 0.5-milligram capsule once a day.

Uses of Avodart

  • Dutasteride is used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men with an enlarged prostate.

Side Effects of Avodart

Before taken Avodart medicine, you should discuss the side effects with your doctor. If any develop or change in intensity, then you should inform your doctor as soon as possible. Because only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Avodart. Side effects may include:

  • Breast tenderness
  • Decreased sex drive
  • Ejaculation problems
  • Enlarged breasts in males
  • Hives
  • Impotence
  • Itchy spots
  • Rash

Warnings and precautions before taking Avodart:

  • Before using this medication, you should tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially if you have liver disease, urinary tract disease, prostate cancer, any allergies.
  • You should not donate blood while you are taking Avodart or for 6 months after stopping treatment to avoid exposing pregnant or breastfeeding women to blood that contains the drug.
  • After taken this medicine, then you may feel dizzy, or drowsiness. So you should not participate in any activities that require alertness such as driving and operate machinery.

Drug Interaction :-

If you are taking Avodart with certain other drugs, then the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. So it is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Avodart with other drugs. So you should be used Avodart cautiously if you're taking HIV drugs such as ritonavir.


Symptoms of a dutasteride overdose are not known. But after taken Avodart if you feel that overdose is suspected, then you should contact with your doctor immediately. Because it may lead to another serious effect.
