Zovirax Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Zovirax® belongs to the family of medicines known as antivirals. It is used to treat infections that may be caused by viruses. Acyclovir is also used to prevent recurrent genital herpes infections.

Zovirax Dosage

  • For Genital Herpes, the usual starting dose is one 200-milligram capsule or 1 teaspoonful of liquid every 4 hours, 5 times daily for 10 days.
  • For Chickenpox, the usual adult dose is 800 milligrams and you should be taken 4 times a day for 5 days.

Uses of Zovirax

  • Zovirax is an antiviral used to treat shingles, chickenpox, or genital herpes.
  • It may also be used to treat other medical conditions those are listed in the medication guide.

Side Effects of Zovirax

Before taken Zovirax medicine, you should discuss the side effects with your doctor.  If any develop or change in intensity, then you should inform your doctor as soon as possible. Because only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Zovirax. Side effects may include:

  • Aggressive behavior
  • Dizziness
  • Fever
  • Hair lossng
  • Sleepiness
  • Tingling
  • Upset stomach
  • Vision problems
  • Yellowish skin and eyes

Warnings and precautions before taking Zovirax:

  • If you have kidney disorder, then you should consult with your doctor before taking Zovirax.
  • If you feel or develop unusual bruising or bleeding under the skin, then you should consult with your doctor immediately.
  • After taken this medicine, then you may feel dizzy, or drowsiness. So you should not participate in any activities that require alertness such as driving and operate machinery.

Drug Interaction :-

If you are taking Zovirax with certain other drugs, then the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. So it is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Zovirax with the following:

  • Cyclosporine
  • Interferon
  • Probenecid
  • Zidovudine
Overdose

After taken Zovirax if you feel that overdose is suspected, then you should contact with your doctor immediately. Because it may lead to another serious effect. Symptoms of a Zovirax overdose include:

  • Agitation
  • Kidney failure
  • Lethargy
  • Coma
  • Seizures
