Xanax Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Xanax is a tranquilizer used in the short-term relief of symptoms of anxiety or the treatment of anxiety disorders. Xanax are also used in the treatment of panic disorder.

Xanax Dosage

  • For the treatment of Anxiety disorder, the usual starting dose of Xanax is 0.25 to 0.5 milligram taken 3 times a day.
  • For the treatment of Panic disorder, the usual starting dose of regular Xanax is 0.5 milligram 3 times a day.

Uses of Xanax

  • It is used for the short-term relief of symptoms of anxiety or the treatment of anxiety disorders.

Side Effects of Xanax

Before taken Xanax medicine, you should discuss the side effects with your doctor.If any develop or change in intensity, then you should inform your doctor as soon as possible. Because only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Xanax. Side effects may include:

  • Anxiety
  • Blurred vision
  • Decreased concentration
  • Headache
  • Impaired sense of smell

Warnings and precautions before taking Xanax:

  • After taken this medicine, then you may feel dizzy, or drowsiness. So you should not participate in any activities that require alertness such as driving and operate machinery.
  • It should be used with caution in elderly or weak patients, and in those with lung disease, alcoholic liver disease, or any disorder that could hinder the elimination of the drug.

If you are taking Xanax with certain other drugs, then the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. So it is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Xanax with the following:

  • Fluoxetine
  • Grapefruit juice
  • Isoniazid
  • Major tranquilizers such as Mellaril and chlorpromazine

  • Oral contraceptives
  • Propoxyphene (Darvon)
  • Sertraline (Zoloft)
Overdose

After taken Xanax if you feel that overdose is suspected, then you should contact with your doctor immediately. Because it may lead to another serious effect. Symptoms of a Xanax overdose include:

  • Confusion
  • Impaired coordination
  • Sleepiness
