Requip Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Requip™ is used to treat Parkinson's disease, that may be caused by a deficit of dopamine. Ropinirole is also used for the treatment of Restless Legs Syndrome. It works by stimulating dopamine receptors in the brain, easier movement.

Requip Dosage

  • The usual starting dose of Requip is 3 times a day. During the first week of therapy, each dose is 0.25 milligram and during the second week, the amount rises to 0.5 milligram.

Uses of Requip

  • Ropinirole is used to treat symptoms of Parkinson's disease, such as stiffness, tremors, muscle spasms, and poor muscle control.
  • It is also used to treat RLS (Restless Legs Syndrome).

Side Effects of Requip

Before taken Requip medicine, you should discuss the side effects with your doctor.  If any develop or change in intensity, then you should inform your doctor as soon as possible. Because only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Requip. Side effects may include:

  • Abnormal vision
  • Bronchitis
  • Confusion
  • Decreased muscle movements
  • Eye problems
  • Fatigue
  • Headache
  • Indigestion
  • Nausea
  • Respiratory tract infection
  • Sore throat
  • Viral infections

Warnings and precautions before taking Requip:

  • If you are taking this medicine, then it may lead to hallucinations, then you should tell your doctor if this occurs.
  • You should be used Requip with extra caution if you have heart disease.
  • After taking Requip, then you may feel dizzy or drowsiness. So you should not participate in any activities that require alertness such as drive and operate machinery.

Drug Interaction :-

If you are taking Requip with certain other drugs, then the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. So it is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Requip with the following:

  • Antidepressants such as Elavil, Pamelor, and Tofranil
  • Ciprofloxacin
  • Drugs that contain levodopa
  • Estrogen medications
  • Major tranquilizers
Overdose

After taken Requip if you feel that overdose is suspected, then you should contact with your doctor immediately. Because it may lead to another serious effect. Symptoms of a Requip overdose include:

  • Chest pain
  • Drowsiness
  • Facial muscle movements
  • Increased jerkiness of movement
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
