Provera Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Provera is used to treats endometriosis, menopausal symptoms, premenstrual tension, sexual aggressive behavior in men, and sleep apnea. Various forms of medroxyprogesterone, such as Depo-Provera, are used as a contraceptive injection and used in the treatment of endometrial cancer.

Provera Dosage

  • To Restore Menstrual Periods, the usual starting dosage of Provera Tablets is 5 to 10 milligrams daily for 5 to 10 days.
  • To Accompany Estrogen Replacement Therapy, the usual starting dosage is 5 or 10 milligrams of Provera a day for 12 to 14 days each month.

Side Effects of Provera

Before taken Provera medicine, you should discuss the side effects with your doctor. If any develop or change in intensity, then you should inform your doctor as soon as possible. Because only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Provera. Side effects may include:

  • Acne, anaphylaxis
  • Blood clot in a vein
  • Cervical erosion or changes in secretions
  • Depression
  • Excessive growth of hair
  • Fever
  • Hair loss
  • Insomnia
  • Lack of menstruation
  • Menstrual flow changes

Warnings and precautions before taking Provera:

  • If you are taking Provera, then it may cause some degree of fluid retention. If you have a medical condition that could be made worse by fluid retention--such as epilepsy, migraine, asthma, or a heart or kidney problem. So you should tell your doctor.
  • Provera may make you depressed, especially if you have suffered from depression in the past. If you become seriously depressed, then you should tell your doctor.
  • If you are diabetic, then your doctor will want to watch you closely while you are taking this drug.

Drug Interaction :-

If you are taking Provera with certain other drugs, then the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. So it is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Provera with aminoglutethimide (Cytadren).

Overdose

Although no specific information is available. But after taken Provera if you feel that overdose is suspected, then you should contact with your doctor immediately. Because it may lead to another serious effect.
