Proventil Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Drugs containing albuterol are used for the prevention and relief of bronchial spasms that narrow the airway. Proventil are also used for the prevention of bronchial spasm due to exercise.

Proventil Dosage

  • If you are using Inhalation Aerosol, the usual starting dosage of albuterol inhalation aerosol is 2 inhalations repeated every 4 to 6 hours.
  • If you are using tablets, then the usual starting dose for adults and children 12 years of age and older is 2 or 4 milligrams 3 to 4 times a day.

Uses of Proventil

  • It is used for the prevention and relief of bronchial spasms that narrow the airway.

Side Effects of Proventil

Before taken Proventil medicine, you should discuss the side effects with your doctor. If any develop or change in intensity, then you should inform your doctor as soon as possible. Because only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Proventil. Side effects may include:

  • Aggression
  • Back pain
  • Chest pain or discomfort
  • Decreased appetite
  • Excitement
  • Fluid retention and swelling
  • General bodily discomfort
  • Headache

Warnings and precautions before taking Proventil:

  • When you are taking albuterol inhalation aerosol, then you should not use other inhaled medications before checking with your doctor.
  • If you have a heart condition, seizure disorder, high blood pressure, overactive thyroid gland, or diabetes, then you should call your doctor immediately if you notice any change in heartbeat or pulse while you are taking Proventil.
  • You may have an immediate, serious allergic reaction to the first dose of albuterol, causing symptoms such as hives, rash, and swelling of the mouth, throat, lips, and tongue. So you should be used this medication with extra caution.

Drug Interaction :-

If you are taking Proventil with certain other drugs, then the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. So it is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Proventil with the following:

  • Antidepressants classified as MAO inhibitors
  • Beta blockers
  • Digoxin
Overdose

After taken Proventil if you feel that overdose is suspected, then you should contact with your doctor immediately. Because it may lead to another serious effect. Symptoms of a Proventil overdose include:

  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • General feeling of illness
  • Headache
  • Insomnia
  • Nausea
  • Radiating chest pain
  • Seizures
  • Tremors
