Cytotec Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Cytotec, a synthetic prostaglandin, reduces the production of stomach acid and also protects the stomach lining. People who take nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may be given Cytotec tablets to help prevent stomach ulcers. Aspirin and other NSAIDs such as Naprosyn, Feldene, and others, which are widely used to control the pain and inflammation of arthritis, are generally hard on the stomach.

Cytotec Dosage

  • The usual starting oral dose of Cytotec for the prevention of NSAID-induced stomach ulcers is 200 micrograms 4 times daily with food.

Uses of Cytotec

  • Misoprostol is used in combination with mifepristone to end an early pregnancy.
  • Misoprostol is also used sometimes to treat ulcers and to induce labor.

Side Effects of Cytotec

Before taken Cytotec medicine, you should discuss the side effects with your doctor. If any develop or change in intensity, then you should inform your doctor as soon as possible. Because only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Cytotec. Side effects may include:

  • Constipation
  • Gas
  • Indigestion
  • Headache
  • Menstrual disorder
  • Paleness
  • Spotting

Warnings and precautions before taking Cytotec:

  • Before taking misoprostol, you should tell your doctor if you are allergic to it; or if you have any other allergies.
  • If you have stomach/intestinal disease, risk factors for uterine rupture when this drug is used vaginally, then you should tell your doctor.
  • After taken this medicine, then you may feel dizzy, or drowsiness. So you should not participate in any activities that require alertness such as driving and operate machinery.

Drug Interaction :-If you are taking Cytotec with certain other drugs, then the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. So it is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Cytotec with the other drugs. Because cytotec does not interfere with arthritis medications such as aspirin and ibuprofen.

Overdose

After taken Cytotec if you feel that overdose is suspected, then you should contact with your doctor immediately. Because it may lead to another serious effect. Symptoms of a Cytotec overdose include

  • Abdominal pain
  • Breathing difficulty
  • Convulsions
  • Diarrhea
  • Fever
  • Heart palpitations
  • Low blood pressure
  • Sedation
