Ativan Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Ativan is in a class of drugs known as benzodiazepines. It affects chemicals in the brain that may become unbalanced and may also cause anxiety, insomnia, and seizures. It is used in the treatment of anxiety disorders and for short-term relief of the symptoms of anxiety.

Ativan Dosage

  • For the treatment of Anxiety, the usual starting dose is a total of 2 to 3 milligrams per day taken in 2 or 3 smaller doses.
  • For the treatment of Insomnia Due to Anxiety, the usual starting dose is 2 to 4 milligrams daily.

Uses of Ativan

  • Ativan is used to treat anxiety, nervousness, and tension that are associated with anxiety disorders.
  • It is also used to treat certain types of seizure disorders and to relieve insomnia.

Side Effects of Ativan

Before taken Ativan medicine, you should discuss the side effects with your doctor. If any develop or change in intensity, then you should inform your doctor as soon as possible. Because only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Ativan. Side effects may include:

  • Dizziness
  • Memory problems
  • Sedation
  • Transient amnesia
  • Unsteadiness
  • Weakness

Warnings and precautions before taking Ativan:

  • If you are severely depressed or have suffered from severe depression, then you should consult with your doctor before taking Ativan.
